Fresh Herbs and Theology

I walked bare foot through the wet grass to the pots that contained my herbs.

My oldest, she held an umbrella as the morning sky lightly sprinkled and followed me with her shoes on.

As I snipped the basil she breathed in the earthy aroma and smiled. We walked a few steps to the cilantro and as I breathed in its aroma my mouth started to water.

“Mmmm. I love the smell of cilantro,” I crooned.

Her mouth went lopsided and her eyebrows raised, “Really mom?”

“Yes,” I shook my head, “come smell it.”

She breathed in what I was sure would be a heavenly aroma and to her it smelled more like death – dirt to be exact.

And it reminded me… of this…

Herbs and Theology

For we are to God the pleasing aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing. To the one we are an aroma that brings death; to the other, an aroma that brings life. And who is equal to such a task?  2 Corinthians 2:15-16

Who is equal to such a task of bringing the pleasing aroma of Christ to the lost?

I certainly am not.

But God, He calls each of His children to the task. He calls us all to go and make disciples, to be the aroma of Christ.

To one we will be the scent of life and to another the scent of death.

And He empowers us with His Spirit. No we are not equal to the task, but we have a God who is more than equal. He will use us to spread the good news of His Son.

So what aroma are you spreading?
