The Sound of Rushing Water

The trail curved, tall maple trees loomed on either side as the sun filtered green through the canopy of leaves. There wasn’t much noise – no cars, voices, or hums from appliances. My husband and I walked hand-in-hand.

“Can you hear it?” I broke our silence.

My husband knitted his brow, then a flash of recognition crossed his face. “The water?”

I nodded, smiling giddy. The mountain stream could not be far and soon we would see the falls.

The water rushed and I loved the sound – soothing, melodic, powerful. As the water pounded and rushed, I stood mesmerized. My eyes drank in the beauty and majesty of God’s creation and my ears soaked in His water symphony. Suddenly it became clear.

“Did you know in the Bible God’s voice is compared to rushing waters?” I look at my husband shocked.

His voice was like the roar of rushing waters, and the land was radiant with his glory. Ezekiel 43:2

His feet were like bronze glowing in a furnace, and his voice was like the sound of rushing waters. Revelation 1:15

“Perhaps that is why running water seems so soothing,” he replied.

I nod my head standing in that sacred moment. Where God connects my heart, mind, and spirit so I can catch a glimpse of Him.

Yes. God’s voice is powerful, melodic, yet soothing. Oh my heart burned with the truth. God longs to comfort us, He is the “the God of all comfort. . .” 2 Corinthians 1:3

Yet God is powerful too. I see the work of His hands rocks split, erosion crumbles. Yes a mighty, powerful, and comforting God. He is the God I serve, the One I love, the God who died for me.

There by that stream God taught me why I love the sound of running water. . . because it is like the sound of His voice.

What has God taught you about Himself lately? Will you share in the comments?

I googled “rushing water” and your blog came up. What you wrote explains how I feel—what I was trying to tap into this morning when I heard the water. I am sitting near the “rushing water,” not in the mountains but in the city—a beautiful structure where the water spills over a stone wall and cascades for 30 yards or so down a series of lovely spillways. I am at the Gilbert Temple, an edifice built by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The sound of the water is like the balm of Gilead. I read the scriptures you posted and Psalm 93:4 (I believe that’s the one) — I love the description of the Lord’s voice being as rushing water—perfect description!
Thank you for your post! God bless!
