When Small Things Really Are Big. . . This Really Got Me Wednesday
Today I have the honor of having a guest post over at my friend Amy’s blog. Her blog is Pieces of Amy and I love it. Check out my post titled Less is More.
Along the same lines of Less is More is this post.
When Small Things Really are Big
But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him. 1 Corinthians 1:27-29
It was a small gesture.
Just one simple act of kindness.
All I did was send a text message – one that included a few verses – to my husband.
My husband asked if he could forward it on to a friend in need of encouragement.
“Sure,” I typed out on my phone’s keypad.
My husband forwarded on the message that contained life-giving words.
Suddenly that simple text was no longer a small thing. Those words encouraged, built-up, and strengthened someone in the midst of doubt and fear.
A text message filled with God’s Word wrought change in the life of the receiver.
And God’s truth hit me hard. The small things in life are the big things.
A smile, a kind word, a scripture, a hug at the right time matter more than we know.
How often do I walk around life with a sour expression, seething frustration because my day didn’t go how I planned? It seems like a small thing. After all I spent all morning in the dentist office with my kids then the vet with a dog. I was unproductive and my day was not spent how I wanted to spend it.
It seems small to have a bad day or bad attitude and yet it isn’t.
I need to ask myself at every moment, “Am I going to bear the fruit of God’s Spirit or am I going to bear fruit of my own?”
God’s fruit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. My fruit is bitterness, impatience, frustration, irritation, anxiety, fickleness, selfishness, fear, and failure.
With every breath I take I either cultivate God’s fruit or my own. In each small choice I make I either bear the fruit of God or the fruit of myself. It cannot be both.
It seems like a small thing to choose to let God’s Spirit direct my attitude and choices, but really it is a big deal.
How do you allow God to direct your daily attitude or choices? What do you do when your attitude stinks? How do you prepare your heart so God can grow His fruit in your life?
Join in the discussion and link-up today. I can’t wait to read what God is doing in your life.
