Divine Power

“I can’t do it!” she shrieks and rushes on, “So I am not going to try any more!” Then she flees the room in tears.

I had only asked her to find her shoes (which were in plain sight by the couch) and put them on. Not a monumental task for a five-year-old, but for some reason she decided she couldn’t do it.

That scene has played over and over in my spiritual life. I tell God that I can’t do it. I stomp my foot, I cry, I run. The problem is that I can do anything that God calls me to do because I have Him to help me.

2 Peter 1:3 says, “His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and goodness.”

We are blessed that Jesus’ divine power gives us everything we need not only for godliness, but for life. That means that whatever comes our way, be it children, or infertility, be it adoption or fertility treatments, be it joy or sorrow, singleness or wedded bliss, reconciliation or separation, plenty or want, we have everything we need to get through it.

In others word we can do it. Whatever the IT is that God has brought to our lives we can do. He gives us divine power and that power gives us all we need. However it is through our knowledge of Him that this divine power flows.

There is the rub. We have access to divine power, but it is through our knowledge. If our knowledge of God is minimal, our access to His divine power is minimal.

Perhaps on illustration will help. When we first accept Jesus as our Savior, our knowledge and experience with God is typically limited. We have a connection to Him immediately, but it is as if we are talking to God on a homemade “telephone.” You know those made out of cans with buttons and strings. We are connected, but our knowledge (the tin-can telephone) severely limits our access to His power.

As our knowledge of God increases so does our connectivity to His power. The more we know Him the bigger He is. The bigger He is the more power we know Him to have. The more power we know He has the more we are able to ask of Him. Do you see it? In order to access all the divine power God wants us to access we must know Him better.

Then we can say “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Because then we know He is able even over our most hopeless, helpless situations.

What can’t you do? What are you going to do to get to know God better so you can have better access to His divine power?
