We All Need A Savior

“Now there were some present at that time who told Jesus about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices. ² Jesus answered, ‘Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans because they suffered this way? ³ I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish. ⁴ Or those eighteen who died when the tower in Siloam fell on them—do you think they were more guilty than all the others living in Jerusalem? ⁵ I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish.’”  Luke 13:1-5

I love how Jesus gets to the heart of the matter. He knows our tendencies. How we point fingers and call others sinners or judge them as worse than ourselves. We love to talk over tragedy and surmise who did what to deserve that. We hear it in different ways:

“They must be in sin for so many terrible things to happen to them.”

“I wonder what they did that made God so mad at them that He let them go through that?”

Jesus asks, “do you think they are more guilty than all the others…?” Do we?

Are we keeping score with God thinking that we somehow deserve the air we breathe, the food we eat, or the house we live in? Do we think we are better than those who get drug down the path of sin farther than they ever imagined? Or do we realize that it is only by God’s grace that we are no longer hopeless and helpless?

Do we see that we are only fellow lepers pointing others to the One who heals? We do not have it all figured out. We are not better or more blessed than others. All we experience is God’s grace for we deserve hell and yet He longs to have a relationship with us. Yes He disciplines, but all so that we will know that He is God.

May we never forget who we were before we accepted Christ: diseased, depraved, enemies of God. Oh that Christ’s sacrifice would never fail to break our hearts and drive us to our knees in humble gratitude. He is enough. He is our Savior. We all need a Savior.

Let’s thank Him today for what He did on the cross and let’s show our love by living in obedience to Him.
