Chasing Geese

19 beautiful Canadian geese landed in my yard on Monday. I marveled at their beauty and elegance, but prayed they would not stay. They are amazing creatures that God created, BUT they are BIG and MESSY and NOT AFRAID of my van.

Tuesday 16 beautiful Canadian geese filled my whole yard leaving droppings on my driveway. As I turned onto my driveway, the birds barely budged. When I honked and waved my arms they slowly turned. Determined, I parked my van in my garage and literally began walking, shaking my keys at them and telling them to leave. They meandered into the empty lot next to my house. Unimpressed.

Wednesday morning they were gone…Until sometime after 10:00 AM. This time as I drove onto the driveway I aimed the van at them, and drove faster towards them in hopes of scaring them away, not to hurting them. I even honked again. They were undaunted. So my three-year old and I braved the dropping mine field and went to shoo them off our land. Again a slow process. They were unimpressed by my actions and even my son’s erratic charging at them had little to no affect.

I imagined what I must look like. Chasing geese…off my property…It must have been humorous to see.

The thing is that we don’t do enough chasing geese in our lives. We allow sinful thoughts, reactions, feelings to be entertained for too long. We compare our lives to others, gossip about the neighborhood, fantasize about how life would be if only…By the time we decide to chase this type of geese away, they have left our hearts and minds in a mess. We seek our way instead of God’s way. We seek our pleasure without thought for others. The easy way out instead of the hard work it takes to make relationships grow.

When we finally realize what we are doing our thoughts are like these geese. Unimpressed with our efforts to contain them. Retraining our minds takes time, effort, but God calls us to it.

“We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” 2 Corinthians 10:5

Oh that we would become militant geese chasers in our thought lives. That we would not entertain uninvited thoughts for a moment so that our minds may be truly stayed on Him. That we may renew our minds daily through God’s word and live transformed lives full of His glory and power.

I can’t wait to hear from you. Will you share how you take your thoughts captive to make them obedient to Christ?
