Content and Struggling – This Really Got Me Link-up
“I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.” Philippians 4:12
The dictionary says content means a state of peaceful happiness.
Paul says he has the secret to contentment in all situations. His secret?
“I can do all this through him [Jesus] who gives me strength.” Philippians 4:13
I can want something but be content without it because of Jesus.
I can watch others get what I would like and feel contented because of Jesus.
I can note apparent injustice and still be content because of Jesus.
Contentment does not mean that all my dreams have come true and the world is spinning according to my direction. On the contrary contentment means trusting God’s plan when things seem to go terribly wrong.
And I fight for contentment armed with gratitude that sometimes sticks in my sinful throat. When I see life through the lens of gratitude things begin to change.
My messy house is a home to young children. It is a structure I would not own except for God’s provision.
The dirty dishes mean we have food to eat and dishes to eat it on.
The holes in my yard are from two delightfully destructive pups who bring joy to my family.
The gratitude changes the way I see the things I desire, but do not have. I still desire things, but not to the detriment of my joy. Yes sometimes my heart aches as I see rounded bellies and small bundles of new life. Oh, but the joy for others overwhelms the sadness for myself. Yes God has good things in store and I am grateful for every moment He brings into my life. His plan is perfect. His ways past knowing.
So I go to war for contentment. I arm myself with gratitude and joy. And God, He fights for me because as I pray His peace that surpasses understanding guards my heart and mind in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:7)
