Eternal Perspective
“A clock,” as my pastor said, “does not give us a proper view of time because it is round and keeps ticking. We get the feeling that there is always more time. I’ll have the next 12 hours or the next week to do something. Instead our time is more like an hourglass. It slips away…”
What are we doing with the sands of time in our hourglasses? Are we wasting them? Are we investing them in something of eternal value? Remember only two things last into eternity–people, not our physical bodies, but our souls and God.
Are we investing in our relationship with God–reading His word, praying, studying His word, memorizing His word, serving Him? Are we framing our worldview through the lens of His word?
Are we investing time in people–raising kids, teaching kids, working with youth, helping the elderly, reaching out to those in need? Are we loving and honoring people well? Do we show them God’s love in tangible ways? Are we influencing the world around us to want to know and love God?
Our time is ticking. I see it as the second hand moves. I watch it as seasons change and years fly by. Time is slipping steadily away.
What am I doing with my time and like Francis Chan asks in his book Crazy Love what do I want to be doing when Jesus comes back. He is coming back. We do not know when. So what do I want to be doing when He does return? How do I want to be spending my time until He returns?
This earth with all its wonders and beauties and dark difficult times is passing away. It will be gone soon. But God has plans for each of us that matter.
“For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Ephesians 2:10
So how are we going to spend our time today?

God must be working, Angela, because this theme of Eternal Perspective poked its head out from some old notes I found last week and I’ve been teaching this to my marriage clients since.
Jesus said, ”
Matthew 25:37“Then the righteous will answer Him, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry, and feed You, or thirsty, and give You something to drink? 38‘And when did we see You a stranger, and invite You in, or naked, and clothe You?39‘When did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?’ 40“The King will answer and say to them, ‘Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it to one of these brothers of Mine, even the least of them, you did it to Me.’
41“Then He will also say to those on His left, ‘Depart from Me, accursed ones, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels; 42for I was hungry, and you gave Me nothing to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me nothing to drink; 43I was a stranger, and you did not invite Me in; naked, and you did not clothe Me; sick, and in prison, and you did not visit Me.’ 44“Then they themselves also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not take care of You?’ 45“Then He will answer them, ‘Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me.’ 46“These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”
