I Can’t Do It Alone

I prefer to do things my way, in my time, and by myself. I often sound like my three year old son. “I do it myself. Mommy.”

The thing is that when I try to do things myself without help from anyone they often turn out like this:

Yes I tried to hang this organizer on the wall without a step stool by myself. This is actually my second attempt and yet it is still crooked. Why? because I decided I could do it myself.

The reality is that I want to do things myself because I am too proud to ask for help. I buy the line that I can do it all and do it all well. I think I just have to organize better, try harder, and get after my to-do list.

The truth is that God never intended us to do it all, much less all by ourselves. He created us to need others and he created us to need Him. When I ask for help from others, I allow others to bless me. I open myself up warts and all and allow others to see me as I am – a broken, flawed, but beautiful work of God. When others see that truth they can more clearly see what God is doing in me.

2 Corinthians 4:7 says “But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.

When we are open about our failures, weaknesses, areas in which we need help, then God is most glorified. As God is glorified our weaknesses are transformed into His strength. When others help us we allow them to bless our lives and to use their God-given gifts to honor God.

I sure need help…Aren’t you glad God made us to need Him and others? What keeps you from asking for help?
