The Word of God – Memory Monday

I delight in your decrees;
I will not neglect your word. Psalm 119:16

O that I would delight in God’s decrees as the psalmist did. When I delight in God’s Word, I do not neglect it.

But we as His church, we neglect God’s Word. Sure we listen to it preached on Sunday and perhaps we hear it again on Wednesday night, but what about the other five days of the week? Do we have to search our houses as we run out the door Sunday morning or Saturday evening for church?

Neglecting God’s Word is not healthy for Christ-followers. While Moses gave his last teaching to Israel, God gave him rules for the king Israel would have hundreds of years later. God wanted the king to not have many wives and not gather much wealth. God says the king of Israel needs to copy down the law on a scroll in his own hand writing and carry it with him always.

It [the law handwritten on a scroll] is to be with him [Israel’s king], and he is to read it all the days of his life so that he may learn to revere the Lord his God and follow carefully all the words of this law and these decrees  Deuteronomy 17:19

 So God wanted Israel’s king to read the law every day of his life so he would revere or fear God. Not only that, but so he would learn to follow God’s decrees. Yet we as a church are essentially biblically illiterate.
“Bible reading has become the religious equivalent of sound-bite journalism. When people read from the Bible they typically open it, read a brief passage without much regard for the context, and consider the primary thought or feeling that the passage provided. If they are comfortable with it, they accept it; otherwise, they deem it interesting but irrelevant to their life, and move on. There is shockingly little growth evident in people’s understanding of the fundamental themes of the scriptures and amazingly little interest in deepening their knowledge and application of biblical principles.”

So it is in reading and knowing scripture that we develop a reverence towards God and learn to follow carefully God’s law. Yet we do not read God’s word except in short sound bites. We don’t have an idea what the whole Bible is about and we are apathetic about learning more.

Still we look in bewildered wonder at why sin is so rampant in churches and why our youth are running from the faith in droves.

Joshua 1:8 tells us the truth, “Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.”

So the opposite of this is true as well. If God’s Word is not spoken, if we do not meditate on it day and night, then we won’t do everything written in it. Then we will not be prosperous nor successful.

Oh that we would hunger for God’s Word and come to His Word as coming to a feast for our souls.

Do you hunger for God’s Word? If not pray that God would begin a hunger for His Word in your life today.

If you do hunger for God’s Word, in the comments share a resource, reading plan, or book that helps you as you read.

All right Memory Monday folks. . . Did you finish Psalm 103? We are moving on to Psalm 121 this week. We will review it for two weeks. Let me know if we need to slow down further. I am willing to do that. Blessings friends!
