Worship God – This Really Got Me Link-up

Today I have a post on Encouragement Cafe about choosing joy.

“You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews.” John 4:22

Jesus says this to the Samaritan woman He met at the well. She asked Him about the differences between the Jewish way of worshipping and the Samaritan way. Then Jesus tells her she worships what she doesn’t know.

Perhaps that is true of us today. We worship what we do not know. We bow to the altar of to-do lists, schedules, and the business of life. We worship movie stars, athletes, and musicians. Perhaps we even climb up on our own pedestal and bend our knee to ourselves.

God hard-wired us to worship something. John Calvin says, “The human heart is an idol factory.” We will worship something, so what are we worshipping today?

Hard work, human rights, social justice issues, doctrine, or what feels good can all take the place of true worship. Especially when we do not “know” what we worship.

We cannot know what we worship unless we know God. We cannot know God without reading the Bible and asking God to help us know Him.

Here is the kicker. When we get a glimpse of who God is, it drives us to worship. Isaiah 6:1-8 tells of Isaiah’s vision of God. Isaiah fell to his face in worship and fear when he saw God. Not only that, but then he is willing to be used by God. He asks God to send him.

So when we get to know God, our response should be to worship Him and then ask Him to send us to go do His will.

I love this song by Addison Road. It reminds me I have so much to learn about God and His holiness, but I can still worship Him as I know Him more.
